At its center, Ophelia lies in the water with her hands open and her face turned upward. The contrast between that abundant growth and the still figure gives Millais' painting its unsettling beauty.

A picture that asks for time

Your eye can wander through reeds, overlapping greens and scattered flowers before returning to the figure. This is an advanced project for someone who wants to sit with a dense composition, rather than hurry toward a simple outline.

Within our Famous Paintings collection, it offers a darker, more contemplative subject. Choose No Frame, DIY Frame or Framed Canvas. Faces, fingers and tiny blossoms are the sections to give extra time.

Read the riverbank as carefully as the figure

A narrow leaf, a pale blossom and a darker mass of reeds each interrupt the water differently. Together they create the abundance surrounding Ophelia. The detailed vegetation keeps the scene from becoming an empty stage; the setting has its own presence, even while the figure remains the emotional center.

A subject with sadness in it

This is not a cheerful flower portrait, and its appeal need not be cheerful. Some paintings hold our attention because beauty and discomfort occupy the same space. Consider that mood when choosing it for yourself or as a gift. Someone drawn to dramatic, contemplative art may respond to it very differently from someone looking for a light decorative project.

Give the smallest passages their own sitting

The face, fingers and scattered blossoms are good places to slow down. Rather than treating the entire riverbank as one task, return to a small part when you have the attention for it. The pleasure here lies in examining the composition as you make it, not in finishing the largest possible area at once.

Need more paint? You can request one extra set of paints for free from PaintEasy.
